Stevenage Walk Leader: Tanya

After Tanya’s daughter studied Bryony’s book Mad Girl for her A Levels, she began following Bryony on Instagram and decided to attend one of Bryony’s book events.Listening to Bryony talk about Mental Health Mates and its mission inspired Tanya to set up her own Walk. Although restrictions this year made it challenging to start the Walk, Tanya is officially hosting her first MHM Stevenage Walk on April 4th! Alongside being a Mental Health Mates Walk Leader, Tanya is now participating in her second Vitality 10k Celebrate You Event.  Here she tells us all about her experience!

How did you get involved with Celebrate You? I had been following Bryony and Jada on Instagram after seeing them at the Marathon. In that void between Christmas and New Year, I remembered the words of Bryony Gordon ‘running saved my life.’ I had been bereaved by suicide two months previously where my world had crashed around me and everything had been put on hold. I made a decision – I got up and completed my first run in a very long time. Once I was out there, I had to take one step at a time, pushing myself past previous limits. The end point at times felt so far away, however, celebrating each achievement was key.
I had seen the Celebrate You campaign and decided to join!

What was your first Celebrate You experience like? I signed up for the run on my own. Not knowing anyone on the day was okay, as everyone, fellow runners and supporters, were friendly. I completed the run as a PB.

How do you Celebrate yourself? Self love … everyday! Taking care of my own needs and not sacrificing my wellbeing to please others.

Your favourite place to Walk? I love being outdoors. It is a to connect with nurate and recharge. My favourite place to walk is in the mountains, particularly Snowdonia. With its beautiful backdrop, challenging climbs and beautiful natural places to swim.

Words that stick with you? Embrace yourself. Be proud of who you are.
